The main learning outcome for this module is that patients should have an individualized approach to thromboprophylaxis for the prevention of venous thromboembolism. Risk stratification based on patient’s individual risk factors should be documented in the patient’s chart. There are a number of Risk Assessment Models that can be used for risk stratification including the Padua Prediction Score and IMPROVE Score for hospitalized medical patients while the Caprini score is validated and widely utilised for surgical patients. Patients immobilised due to trauma or lower limb casting also require a individualised risk-assessment to determine their need for prophylaxis. The module sets out common scenarios that we encounter in the fracture clinic with suggested management for VTE Prevention.
